Top 10 Albums of 2011!

Another year has come and gone. It's amazing how the years fly by. A couple of days ago I found some of my old playlists on paper in my filing cabinet. It's fun to peruse what I used to play and what I still play regularly on my show. This has been such a fun journey of music. A few of my friends are hosts at CFCR and we all say that our week revolves around our radio show. For me, the past 8+ years have revolved around Wednesday mornings. Looking back sure is fun! It is also fun to sift through the albums of 2011 to come up with my favourites. Without further ado, here is the list! At the bottom of the list is a link to a playlist that shows the songs on Grooveshark. So read on!

10. The Pack A.D. - Unpersons
This Vancouver female duo, Becky Black and Maya Miller, keeps putting out amazing albums! Unpersons is no different. Their raw sound follows through this whole album.
Songs: Sirens, Haunt You

9. Hey Rosetta! - Seeds
Seeds, indeed. Little seeds of wonderful sounds and words that came together to make this amazing album. They are such a great live band and remain a great recording band as well!
Songs: Seeds, Welcome

8. Sarah Slean - Land and Sea
This double album by this amazing songstress and pianist is amazing. Land has lots of upbeat songs while Sea is more orchestral. It is dramatic, as is her style. This album is truly lovely!
Songs: Everybody's on TV, Set it Free

7. The Deep Dark Woods - The Place I left Behind
These local boys deliver again! I just love their story telling through words and music. This album makes me think of laying in a hammock near my garden.
Songs: The Play I left Behind, The Banks of the Leopold Canal

6. Feist - Metals
This album was not really what I was expecting. I didn't really have expectations, but it's not what I thought it would be. Feist really put her heart and soul into this album. It's a great album, but The Reminder remains my favourite album of hers.
Songs: The Circle Married the Line, How Come you Never Go There

5. Elliott Brood - Days into Years
These Ontario guys are just so amazing. I got to see them at Halloween and if I hadn't gone to that show, they might not have ended up on my Top 10 Albums list. Sometimes the live show really brings the album to life. That is what happened with this one. It brought it to my mind and I listened to it over and over. Such a great album!
Songs: Lindsay, If I Get Old, Northern Air

4. Jenn Grant - Honeymoon Punch
I love Jenn! I do. She is pure wonderful. Her music is sweet and sexy and thoughtful. This album really shows Jenn's personality. It's a lot more "poppy" than her previous albums. It suits her. When I need to smile, I listen to this album.
Songs: Getcha Good, Oh my heart

3. Blitzen Trapper - American Goldwing
Wow. This band. Wow. They blow me away with every release of theirs! I have been a little bit obsessed with this album off and on since it was released. Be warned: it's addicting!
Songs: Love the Way you Walk Away, Your Crying Eyes

2. The Black Keys - El Camino
Oh my goodness. I don't even know what to say about this album. Brilliant! Amazing! Stunning! I love it! It just came out and I'm already in love with it. If I had more time with this album, it would probably have made it to #1. Alas, it sits at #2.
Songs: Lonely Boy, Dead and Gone, Run Right Back

1. The Decemberists - The King is Dead
I fell in love with this album right away, as soon as it came out. It is classic Decemberists music, unlike their last album Hazards of Love. It has so many great songs and my favourite one is Down by the Water. It's my favourite song of the year, and maybe the last 5 years!
Songs: This is why we Fight, Down by the Water, January Hymn

Here is the playlist on Grooveshark!

December 21, 2011 "you find magic from your God, and we find magic everywhere"

Dar Williams' song The Christians and The Pagans is my favourite solstice song. It might be the only solstice-specific song that I know, but still. It's great. "I think magic's in the learning, 'Cause now when Christians sit with Pagans only pumpkin pies are burning." During this magical time, think about the light that is to come.

December 14, 2011 Playlist!

First of all, this is my 202nd post on this blog! Wow. That seems like a lot, doesn't it? Yes, it does. That means that I have been on the air on Wednesday mornings around 200 times since 2007. It is always a pleasure to play music on the radio and can't believe how long I've been doing this!

Secondly, being sick sucks. I know this isn't new information, but I just needed to say it. For the past several weeks I have been slow-moving and sick. This is why I have been sporadic the past few weeks (thanks to Chris for doing a double-shift last week!). I'm on the mend, though, and am feeling much better.

Thirdly, it's very dark out. This is probably brand new information for you, but it's true! I am desperately hoping for snow to happen. Next week I will have a special solstice show for you. Stay tuned for that!

When I came into the station today, I was optimistic. But then. A headline caught my eye. It said, "Who killed off the compact disc? Experts weigh in." I walked away from the headline, but I came back to it. I could only read bits and pieces of it. Is YouTube really the MAIN way the kids these days are listening to music? REALLY?! People don't even download music anymore? They "listen" to it on YouTube? I don't think it's the death of the CD, it's the death of MUSIC! Where is the government to bail out this completely worthy industry? The article says that the CD will be obsolete by 2014. As sad as this makes me, change will always occur. Hopefully one day the CD will make a comeback as vinyl did. I'll just have to wait 20 years and try to keep my CD collection as well-preserved as I can. On that note, here is this week's playlist!

November 2nd Playlist! "There's something out there, looking around in the midnight air"

On Monday night a friend surprised me with a ticket to Elliott Brood. I had been undecided on whether I would go and then decided not to. But a surprise free ticket changed all of that. It used to be that when I went to a show, I would stay until the bitter end even if I had to work the next day. However, in the past year or two, I have often left before the show was even over! I remember being a young 20-somethinger thinking how easy it was to stay up late and get to work/school early. Maybe I'm getting older or maybe I just expect myself to be 100% at work all the time and didn't before, but shows during the week are few and far between in my life. Even Friday night shows can be difficult after a long week of getting up early and working, etc. That being said, Elliott Brood was amazing and TOTALLY worth the exhaustion all day yesterday!

October 19 Playlist!

Last weekend in my hometown, Smeaton, the volunteer fire department raised a whole pile of money for their newly purchased pumper fire truck. It really made me think about community and how great it is when people come together to support a great thing. This small fire department, made up entirely of volunteers, has been to every grass fire, highway accident, and house fire in the area surrounding it. It just goes to show that a small group of people who are committed to helping others can really make a difference. The occupation that is happening in New York, Saskatoon, and many other cities reminds me that it could really make an important change in the world. Support local people who are working to better the world for everyone, whether it be community radio playing local artists, people sleeping in the park to bring awareness to the fact that the world's wealth is held by a small group of people unnecessarily, or a small farming community coming together to help each other out.

September 14, 2011 Playlist! "Half is blue and the other half is gold"

It is fall. The equinox may not be here, but the air has changed. It is fall. With fall, though, comes concert season and FM-Phasis! It's kind of an exciting time with regard to music. So before you get sad about the end of summer, get excited about the awesome concerts coming up! Also, consider donating to CFCR this month for FM-Phasis. Without this fundraiser, we would not be able to be on the air. During FM-Phasis I will be taking lots of requests with donations. Think about what you'd like me to play and how much you'd like to donate.

September 7th Playlist!

It feels like I have not been on the air for months, but really it's only been a couple of weeks. I find that time feels longer when it is full of activities. The last two weeks have definitely been full of activities - I traveled to B.C., camped along the way, and did an Ironman triathlon in Penticton. Despite the 3.8km swim, 180km bike, and 42km run, I am not too sore and I'm alive to tell the tale of my sub-16-hour adventure in the hot, mountainous, desert that is the Ironman Canada course. Now I'm back in Saskatoon and preparing for a fun team race for the Saskatoon Ultra-Marathon and probably another stab at a personal best at Ironman Canada.

When I got back to the land of the living and music, I realized that the fall season of concerts is upon us! How did I miss this? Luckily, I didn't miss too many amazing shows and am just in time for the fall concerts. Mother Mother is tonight, Malajube and The Besnard Lakes are the same night as Royal Wood. I have a huge crush on Royal, but I'm going to try to hit both that night. Said the Whale is on Sept. 20th. Cuff the Duke is on November 5th. Also, FM-Phasis is coming!!!! Wow, so much. Stay tune to CFCR and my blog to see what is going on for FM-Phasis - I won't be shaving my head, but hopefully I can entice you to donate to my show this year. You will just have to wait and see what I come up with.

August 17, 2011 "You're gonna want me with a bat of an eye, Baby I feel lucky tonight"

It's tough to follow up a week like last week's birthday show, but this week's show was pretty awesome (if I do say so myself). I looked through the new music section thoroughly for this week's show and WOW! is there a lot of great new music put out this year. With new music and the fall coming up, it means there are lots of concerts coming up! I'm stoked for that - it helps with the end-of-summer blues. I will be gone for the next two weeks from the airwaves, but I'll be back in September just in time for FM-Phasis, CFCR's annual fundraiser, and the abundance of concerts. Take care until then!

August 10th Birthday Show!

It's true that today is my birthday. If you listened to my show, you could probably tell that I was really excited about it. As a Leo, I don't hide what I'm thinking or feeling... it's part of our charm! Today's show was all about me and my favourite songs. I have more favourite songs than one can shake a stick at, but the ones I played today are definitely among them. I hope that you enjoyed listening to the show as much as I enjoyed playing them! Who says that birthdays are less exciting as you get older? Not me!

July 20th Playlist! "But it's all so easy, All you gotta do is try, Try a little tenderness"

Thank goodness for last night's rain and cool breeze to ease the heat of the past few days. My house has been as hot as it is outside... I have been ready for a break from the hot sun and the humidity. But I'm not complaining. I don't like to complain about the heat in the summer because we have so much cold in the winter that it just seems greedy or something. This is my last show for a couple of weeks, but fear not! My next show will be MY RADIO SHOW!!! I have waited 7 years to have another birthday show. It's going to be awesome! I'll "see" you in three weeks! August 10th. Put it on your calendar. July 6th Playlist! "Strike two... Baby I'm howlin for you"

There were two highlights from my life last week. One was finishing my fourth half Ironman triathlon. The other was seeing The Black Keys live in Saskatoon. To be honest, I'm not sure which one I'm more stoked about! They were both super awesome and a great time. One big difference was that I was super glad to be done the triathlon, but I didn't want The Black Keys concert to end EVER. They did promise to come back so those of you who missed out on tickets, keep your ear to the ground and maybe you, too, can see this extraordinary band live.

June 22nd Playlist! "Oh Saskatchewan, you never meant any harm to anyone"

Recently a new friend has come into my life. He is biking across Canada from west to east, but originally comes from Germany. It is an adventure that I can relate to, having done the trip from Saskatoon to PEI on bicycle 10 years ago. Traveling by bicycle is so simple: you bike, eat, and sleep. You try not to carry too much food or too much water. It utilizes all of the senses. It is a great trip to take and I'm glad that I got to be part of my buddy's adventure! This really has nothing to do with today's show

June 15th Playlist: "Right off, no never ever never ever"

Summer is almost here and change is abound. A full moon last night lit my way home as I thought about the coming week. A week of family and the recent small-farm tradition: the auction sale. Tomorrow my dad is selling his dirty ol' tractor (as Little Miss Higgins put it) and moving on from farming. Coincidentally, I got a request this morning for some Fred Eaglesmith... it all came together today! It's also Father's Day coming up, so I thought I'd play a little bit of Janis Joplin for him. I woke up this morning to the sound of Loretta Lynn and Jack White, but it wasn't from the radio but in my memory. I knew that I had to hear that song as soon as possible. Now I'm not sure if people who don't do radio shows wake up with songs that they MUST HEAR as soon as possible, but I sure do. It's like I'm being compelled by the music spirits or something. Also, I really love Portland, Oregon the city so I guess it makes sense that I play the song as often as I do. Over the past few months I've also had a slight obsession with Jack White. It happens, I'm sure. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the show!

I can't believe it's June! Seriously, how did this happen? Slowly but surely I suppose. Alas, I discovered this morning that today was June 1st. A new month, a new day. Last night I had a wicked bout of insomnia. It ended up that I only got a little over 3 hours of sleep so it really is the music this morning that is keeping me going. It seems like summer is finally upon us! It was a great long weekend to be out and about. I hope that you enjoyed it. However, that extra weekend day made Wednesday come way faster than I anticipated. Hence my tardiness this morning. I apologize for that. I hope that the rest of the show made up for the late start!

May is a time for hope and birthdays. I know so many people who were born in May, including my lovely and beautiful sister. It is a time for trees getting leaves, tulips blooming, and hope for a great summer. Even with the rain these past couple of days, I am hopeful for sunny summer fun. I hope you are too!

May 11th Playlist!

Last weekend I was in wet Winnipeg and I have to admit that I love that city! People are often surprised when I start gushing about Winnipeg. Here are my reasons for loving Winnipeg: great vegan restaurants, lots of live music, and it has low housing prices. Also, I have some great friends and family that live there. So today's show started off with a little tribute to one of my favourite cities in Canada. Also, I totally spotted Greg MacPherson at one of the bars, which was awesome.

April 20th Playlist!

Today's show is quite a mix of old songs with new songs. I have been feeling a bit musically nostalgic lately. As I was walking to the station this morning I realized that the song I started the show with this morning was the first song I played in my Green Eggs and Ham career. I had no idea that 7 years later I would still be on the airwaves in the same time slot playing the same song. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this morning's show!

April 13th Playlist!

The time of the year has come when the sun wakes me up for my trek to the radio station. It is great! After 7+ years of getting up at 5am for the 6:00 start, I think I'm finally getting used to getting up early for the show. It still surprises me how much I love picking and playing music for the good community radio listening folks of Saskatoon. Hmm... apparently I'm feeling reflective today. Oh yeah, don't forget to get your Community Radio membership! You can win prizes and tickets and you would be supporting awesome radio.

April 6th Playlist!

Last weekend was Vive Fest 3, a truly indie rock festival to kick off spring. From what I could tell, it was a great success with 3 venues going and lots of great indie rock bands. I had the pleasure of hosting Samantha Savage and her band (5 in total) on my living room floor. They were such lovely people and it is always nice to host people who are thankful for a place to sleep that isn't their van (even if one of them was allergic to my dog - sorry, Chris!). It was a great coming together of people who truly love and appreciate independent music. Today is also the day of birth of my friends Amanda and Lucas! I am excited to welcome this little person into the world with a bit of music dedicated to Baby Storey.

March 30, 2011 Playlist!

Thank goodness March is almost over! Spring can come anytime, right? Yes, right. I'm excited for the Mother Mother concert on Sunday. This is a busy weekend music-wise. Vivefest 3 has a great line-up of artists playing at different venues in the city. Then there is other shows like Kay the Aquanaut at Amigo's, The Rural Alberta Advantage, and BA Johnstone also at Amigo's. Spring is, indeed, coming even if the weather doesn't show it.

March 23, 2011 Playlist!

This past week has felt like a month for me. March is such an interesting and long month. It is a weather up-and-down, which takes people with it. I am definitely feeling that. That being said, I think we can all see and feel spring coming. We've had glimmers of it. I'm very much looking forward to spring and summer! I think I need to come up with something other than weather to write about on my blog. How about music!?

March 16, 2011 Playlist!

As I write this, the sun is just coming over the buildings in downtown Saskatoon. The sun! THE SUN!!! How amazing is this? Yesterday I walked around by the river in a short-sleeved shirt! It was amazing, with all of that Vitamin D soaking into my skin. I'm sure we are all relieved to see that winter is becoming a memory and spring is here (or almost here). This really has nothing to do with music or the radio show I played today, but I know we're all thinking about the weather. So get out and enjoy as much of it as you can!

March 2 Playlist!

If the saying is true, then March has come in like a lion and hopefully it will go out like a lamb. Even for an optimist like myself, this weather is taking its toll. I find myself complaining about it a little more, when I used to look on the bright side like, "At least it's sunny!" or "Well, the days are getting longer!" However, those seem less important than they used to. That being said, it is 7:18am and I can see the sky lightening around the buildings in downtown Saskatoon. That makes me a little happier. Now, if only it wasn't -30! Alas, we will have to keep warm through music. So get dancing and create some heat!

February 16h Playlist!

This week's show was thrown together at the last minute, but I feel like it was one of my best shows yet! I'm so excited for new albums to come out in 2011 - I just want to listen to musicmusicmusic, which I have. I'm also obsessed with The Sadies right now, ever since Sunday night's concert, which was bizarre and will be a concert not soon forgotten. Even with one key band member missing, they were still awesome. I sure hope Dallas' leg gets better soon. They have already postponed and rescheduled their tour for June. That was quick! I'm excited already, but I feel a little guilty that it happened here in Saskatoon. And maybe I'm a little selfish, but I'm also kind of glad that it happened here because it meant that we got to see a once-in-a-lifetime set of The Sadies, sans Dallas (which likely will not happen again and as Travis said, we HOPE it won't happen again). Anyway, without further ado, here is the playlist from today's show.

February 9th Playlist!

So winter's half over and the temperatures really haven't been that bad. That being said, I'm desperately looking forward to spring. The upcoming Blues Festival looks like it will keep us warm and going until spring. Also, this upcoming week is V-day, my second-most hated high-pressure holiday. I hope that you all feel loved this v-day, but if you don't, just ignore the day and know that it, too, will pass. With that ray of sunshine, here is this week's playlist....

Anything that gives hope is good enough for me! So today's show had some songs that pertain to this theme and some songs that didn't. I hope you enjoyed it and I'm sure looking forward to spring!

January 19th Playlist!

Good morning and welcome to winter! For the past many weeks people keep saying how cold it was, to which I would reply, "It's not that bad." But today it actually IS that bad! It's cold - the wind is harsh making the air hurt to breathe in. However, at 5:30 this morning I took a few minutes to look at the beautiful moon. It was surrounded by a moondog and was breathtakingly beautiful. Such beauty can only occur when it is so cold out that your skin freezes in seconds. Today's show was inspired by the harsh cold and its beauty.

Top 10 Albums of 2010!

I could hardly wait to get this show going this morning! My top 10 albums of 2010 has been something I've thought about since the end of November and I only made final decisions yesterday. This year it seems to have been more difficult than previous years. In reality, I wish that I could do a Top 20 Albums of 2010 in no particular order. However, I decided to stick with my theme of Top 10 Albums and go with it. I'm sure that I will change my mind at some point in the future and wish that I had put an album in this list. That being said, and without further ado, here are my Top 10 Albums of 2010!

#10 - The Pack A.D. - We Kill Computers
This album is similar to their previous albums, but has a bit of a psychadelic edge to it. They've never made my Top 10 Albums list before because I only became extremely familiar with them in 2010. However, this prolific Vancouver-based duo were on my radar all year with their release of this album.
Songs we heard: Crazy and B.C is on Fire

#9 - Little Miss Higgins - Across the Plains
LMH is such a fantastic musician and I'm proud to call her a fellow Saskatchewanian! Her sound feels just like the prairies - earthy with an edge... a bit sassy and full of heart. This album is a great one because it is silly, it is serious, it is fast, and it is slow. It takes you through a range of emotions and tempos. This is album I've listened to lots on road trips and while gardening in my yard.
Songs we heard: Bargain! Shop Panties and Wash these Blues Away

#8 - The New Pornographers - Together
This album has a LOT of catchy songs. Every song is fun to dance to and sing to. It sounds similar to Challengers, which I also loved, and is just a great album all around. I really fell in love with this album when they played songs from it live at The Odeon this fall. They were all fantastic and it was so great to see them all together, including Neko Case.
Songs we heard: Your hands (together) and Silver Dollar Jenny

#7 - Blitzen Trapper - Destroyer of the Void
This album is a good representation of what Blitzen Trapper sounds like. A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll. I absolutely LOVE the duet with Alela Diane, who I discovered this year thanks to my good friend Pete.
Songs we heard: Laughing Love and The Tree (featuring Alela Diane)

#6 - Basia Bulat - Heart of my Own
This album was a big surprise for me. I had no idea I would love it this much! It speaks to my heart like none other that was released this year. Her amazing voice is perfectly accompanied by her unique musical instrumental sounds. When she opened up for Josh Ritter, she seemed a bit nervous, but was so sweet and cute up there on the big stage, just her and her autoharp. Her songs are a reflection of her sweetness and her edge. I just love this album!
Songs we heard: Go on, Run, and Heart of my Own

#5 - Frazey Ford - Obadiah
She was the front woman for The Be Good Tanyas so it's no wonder that I love her album so much. Her album sounds a lot like The Be Good Tanyas, particularly their first album "Blue Horse." However, she has obviously put her own spin on song songs with a bit of a funky bluesy sound. Her voice is so unique and unmistakable - "hauntingly beautiful" is what I call voices like hers that hit me right in the gut when I listen to them. Marissa Nadler is another musician that I consider to have that ability.
Songs we heard: Firecracker and Blue Streak Mama

#4 - Josh Ritter - So Runs the World Away
This guy... this guy is so amazing! Can he do no wrong? Not in my eyes! His amazing mix of great song writing and musician-ship is so special. He has really come a long way in these past few albums. This one is his best so far, narrowly beating out The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter... at least in my opinion! I love the heart and soul that he put into this album from heartfelt ballads to fast and fun songs.
Songs we heard: Change of Time and Lantern

#3 - Band of Horses - Infinite Arms
This album is super catchy and a great all-around album. It is classic modern indie rock. From start to finish, it is a solid representation of their sound showing fantastic song-writing and amazing guitar-work. I just love it!
Songs we heard: Laredo and On my way back home

#2 - Sarah Harmer - Oh Little Fire
Sarah (I can call her that since we had a great phone conversation earlier this year) is arguably one of the best song writers this country has ever seen. This album is one of heartbreak, but somehow she makes it seem not so bad. On top of it all, she got Neko Case to sing with her on the album! Two amazing voices in one amazing song. It is no wonder this is one of my top albums from 2010.
Songs we heard: Captive and One Match

#1 - Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
This album has been called a favourite of many many people, magazines, and websites. I tried to be different and pick a different one, but it was impossible. This album is one of the most relevant albums of our time. When it came out, it was #1 in North America. Arcade Fire has become mainstream, but not because they've changed, but because others have come to realize their brilliance as a band. Individually, they are great musicians. As a band they are spectacular. They are one of the most amazing live bands I've ever seen and their show in Saskatoon was my #1 show of the year. It was breathtaking at times as I literally could not breath from amazement of seeing such an amazing show. I can't say enough good things about this band or this album.
Songs we heard: Rococo, Modern Man, Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)
